Many families are hitting the road for summer vacations. Here are some tips to be safe while traveling the roads this summer:
1. Have your car inspected to make sure everything is in tip top condition.
a. Check tires, replace if necessary
b. Inspect belts, hoses, wiper blades
c. Get the oil changed and coolant system flushed, make sure all fluids are full: oil,
brake, transmission, power steering, windshield washer and coolant
d. Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, interior and trailer lights
e. Have the air conditioner checked
2. Have an emergency kit including a cell phone charger, bottled water, nonperishable food
items, first aid kit, flashlight, flares, maps, paper towels, blanket, tools, jumper cables,
tire repair kit
3. Plan the trip ahead of time
a. Map out the destination, estimate the mileage and gas needed
b. Expect roadwork and delays
c. Check road conditions and road closures
d. Keep your fuel tank more than half full at all times
4. BUCKLE UP everyone in the vehicle!
5. Focus on the road
a. DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE!
b. Pull over to program your GPS or let a passenger do it
c. Share driving with another licensed passenger to avoid fatigue
d. Schedule frequent breaks
e. Stop for food, do not eat while driving
